Example of the Development of a Vehicle-Based Truck Roll Stability Advisory and Control System
A vehicle-based truck Roll Stability Advisor/Control system has been developed by Meritor-Wabco and field tested under the U.S. DOT Intelligent Vehicle Initiative (FMCSA, 2003b). This vehicle-based system is relatively inexpensive (a cost of under $1,000 per truck is projected) and incorporates information on vehicle load status and weight (affecting center-or-gravity height and thus rollover risk) in its warning algorithm. The control system consists of a tractor and a trailer element, which monitors lateral acceleration and wheel speed, and applies appropriate controls to the engine and braking system when limits are exceeded.
