Emphasis Area
Run-Off-Road Crashes

Strategy Number and Name
Shoulder Rumble Strips

Agency and Jurisdiction
Kansas DOT

Problem(s) Identified
Kansas found that rolled in rumble strips on asphalt pavement were "healing" and losing their effectiveness.

Goals and Objectives Established
Develop and implement a new policy requiring milled-in rumble strips on all new construction and reconstruction efforts.

Description of Strategy(ies) Implemented
Kansas has revised their rumble strip policy to require that all new rumble strips be milled-in rather than rolled-in. This will affect both concrete and asphalt shoulders. Milled- or formed-in strips will be included in project plans for concrete shoulders. Rumble strips will be removed from plans for asphalt projects, but within a year of new asphalt overlays or construction, each district will let one project which will install milled-in strips on all sections with new pavement in the District.

Summary of Implementation Effort
Implementation began in summer, 2001.

Summary of Results
Not evaluated since recently implemented.
