Head-On Collisions: Appendix 3

Profiles of State and Local Implementation Efforts: Strategy 18.1 A1 (Kansas Department of Transportation)

Emphasis Area
18.1-Reducing accidents involving head-on collisions

Objective
18.1 A-Keep vehicles from encroaching into opposite lane

Strategy
18.1 A1-Install centerline rumble strips for two-lane roads

Agency and Jurisdiction
Kansas DOT

Problem(s) Identified
Kansas is looking for ways to reduce head-on crashes on two-lane roads.

Goals and Objectives Established
Implement an experimental effort to test centerline rumble strips before moving to broader implementation.

Description of Strategy Implemented
Centerline rumble strips are being installed in one reconstruction project involving a median-volume two-lane rural road. These are 12-inch-wide milled-in strips on the centerline. Different longitudinal patterns will be tried (some continuous, some with skips). The rumble strips are being carried through both passing and no-passing zones.

Summary of Implementation Effort
Began in summer 2001.

Summary of Results
Results of the implementation are not available yet.
