Goal 12 - Making Truck Travel Safer
Year after year, large trucks are involved in thousands of crashes between 4,000 and 5,000 deaths annually during the decade of 1985 to 1995. By a wide margin, the fatalities are occupants of other vehicles as opposed to truck occupants (greater than 6:1 in 1995). Poor driver performance, including fatigue, is a major contributing factor, as is an inadequate level of awareness of trucks by other drivers on the road. The unsafe condition of many trucks, particularly their braking and steering systems and tires, is also a concern.

Recommended Strategies:

• Strategy 12A: Refocus commercial vehicle programs and regulations to achieve crash reductions rather than on the number of enforcement actions
• Strategy 12B: Reduce the number of commercial vehicle crashes resulting from loss of alertness and driver fatigue
• Strategy 12C: Reduce the number of commercial vehicle crashes resulting from driver errors
• Strategy 12D: Implement traffic controls and address highway design problems to reduce the most prevalent truck crashes on Interstate and major highways
• Strategy 12E: Enhance the safe operating condition of trucks and buses
