« Back to other goalsGoal 12 - Making Truck Travel Safer Year after year, large trucks are involved in thousands of crashes between 4,000 and 5,000 deaths annually during the decade of 1985 to 1995. By a wide margin, the fatalities are occupants of other vehicles as opposed to truck occupants (greater than 6:1 in 1995). Poor driver performance, including fatigue, is a major contributing factor, as is an inadequate level of awareness of trucks by other drivers on the road. The unsafe condition of many trucks, particularly their braking and steering systems and tires, is also a concern. Recommended Strategies:
